Building Books As Tools For Social Change

New Society Publishers’ mission is to publish books for a world of change in a way that has a minimum impact on our environment.

Our vision is to provide the world with fundamental tools to help build a just and ecologically sustainable society.

New Society Publishers was the first carbon-neutral publishing house in North America. In 2001, they committed to publishing all their books on 100% post-consumer recycled paper, leading the book publishing community in Canada. New Society has introduced a unique component to its thriving ebook program--New Society’s Guide To Environmentally Responsible Digital Reading (see digital reading tab). In 2015, we became a registered B Corporation.

Supporting Local

New Society Publishers have a policy of hiring locally, and have employed local people in editing, design, marketing, and information technology. The company actively supports the local community through monthly donations to not-for-profits, regular donations to fundraisers and by offering a unique employee benefit which allows employees two hours paid community volunteer work per week on a rotational basis.

As founding publisher Judith Plant says, “Given climate change, ecological limits, the end of cheap energy, and the underlying economic and social collapse here and around the world, the party’s over, as New Society author Richard Heinberg succinctly puts it. We’re at a tipping point, and we need tools, techniques, strategies and inspiration for radical change, now.”

Harnessing Technology

New Society embraces technological challenges facing the publishing industry in the 21st century. Explains Plant, “Of course we sell all of our books as ebooks, and we plan to continue this. But the real challenge as a publisher is adapting to the broader electronic culture. We’re working on proactive ways to harness these technologies to work for our authors in getting their critical messages out to the reading public, in whichever form that public might use.”

“Courage and resiliency are at the core of New Society Publishers’ corporate culture,” says Plant, “Our committed, passionate, smart and savvy staff are key to our success and many have been with New Society since the early days.”
